The Head Custodian's primary goal is to maintain a safe, comfortable, and functional environment in all Municipal buildings in a cost-effective, customer-oriented manner. This role supports the Department of Public Facilities' mission to serve residents and protect the town's capital investments. The position involves overseeing the daily operations of a building, coordinating custodial staff, managing schedules and resources, and ensuring the building is safe and clean. This role also includes responsibilities for employee performance evaluations, discipline, inventory management, and maintenance of equipment. The Head Custodian is responsible for snow removal operations, ensuring exit doors are secured, waste removal, cleaning various areas of the building (classrooms, corridors, restrooms, windows, floors), replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, and complying with trash disposal laws. They will also move furniture, remain on premises during authorized hours, report damages, secure the building, manage supplies, check fire extinguishers, and assist with special events and maintenance tasks. The Head Custodian supervises building custodians, orders and tracks supplies, ensures security of equipment, maintains MSDS folders, assists with work schedules, reviews work performed by staff and contractors, conducts on-the-job training, coordinates leave requests, recommends equipment purchases and policy changes, acts as a liaison between custodial and maintenance staff, and manages inventory. They are also responsible for notifying management of policy non-compliance and fostering harmony among the custodial staff.
