About The Position

The Custodian 1, Head, will supervise custodians, perform cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assign tasks to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities. This role involves managing assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel, taking responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. All district employees are expected to demonstrate regular and predictable attendance, support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan, engage in civility, respect, and professionalism, and maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform their duties.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in large scale housekeeping and yard maintenance knowledge.
  • One (1) year of related management or supervisory experience required.
  • Must successfully complete Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) professional custodial training program.
  • Must successfully complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement Training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals.
  • Writes routine reports and correspondence.
  • Speaks effectively before groups of individuals.
  • Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Computes rate, ratio, and percent and draws and interprets bar graphs.
  • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and burnishes floors, including vacuuming and shampooing carpets.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, restocks supplies, and removes and disposes of trash and waste products.
  • Maintains clean, organized custodial supply storage.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, toilet seats, and ceiling tiles, unclogging toilets, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities, and assembling/moving furniture.
  • Executes a lawn program including mowing, weeding, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal.
  • Opens or closes and secures facilities, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Ensures grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Attends in-service meetings to stay updated with technology changes and trains staff on proper cleaning techniques.
  • Develops schedules for custodial staff.
  • Prepares all required reports and maintains confidential records using basic computer skills.
  • Supervises assigned personnel, monitors staff performance, and makes immediate improvements.
  • Maintains dependable transportation and an updated working telephone.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
