About The Position

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking a Custodial Supervisor 3 for the Facilities Maintenance Services (FMS) Department. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the daily activities of subordinate Custodial Worker staff and contracted custodial personnel. The position involves overseeing cleaning operations, coordinating special events, conducting audits, managing inventory, and ensuring staff training and performance.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in custodial and buildings maintenance work at a multi-building facility.
  • Two (2) years of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity which included assigning, evaluating and directing the work of custodial workers; preparing bid specifications for the procurement of equipment, materials and chemicals; and providing training in the use of cleaning materials and chemicals and the use of various types of powered equipment.
  • OR One (1) year of experience as a Custodial Supervisor II in Nevada State service.
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic to intermediate computer proficiency, including the use of email, Excel spreadsheets, and computerized work order or facility management systems.
  • Experience supervising a large team and managing custodial operations in large-scale facilities.
  • Experience operating floor care equipment for hard surface flooring and carpeted areas.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain work schedules; accommodate staff absences.
  • Oversee cleaning activities following special events and emergency cleanup efforts.
  • Coordinate with external entities on the planning, execution, and back charge of special events.
  • Conduct daily audits to ensure compliance with established standards; provide corrective feedback.
  • Observe and document the general condition of buildings, floors, carpets, custodial equipment, and supplies; provide feedback and recommendations to direct supervisor.
  • Lead the planning and coordination of annual custodial-related projects, including floor and carpet cleaning, window cleaning, and support services for sporting events.
  • Supervise subordinate custodial staff to include Custodial Worker 1, Custodial Worker 2, and Custodial Supervisor 2 positions; plan, direct, organize, coordinate, and monitor work.
  • Assess employee training needs, develop training curriculum, and conduct training sessions.
  • Ensure staff remains informed of current cleaning techniques, methods, responsibilities, and safety procedures.
  • Evaluate university staff performance, administer disciplinary actions, and document personnel-related actions.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Participate in the recruitment process of hiring new staff.
  • Supervise, audit, and monitor the service provided by custodial contractors.
  • Research custodial contractors and make recommendations of new contractors.
  • Communicate with contract management to report performance challenges.
  • Observe and report unusual or suspicious activity.
  • Ensure that staff follow the proper protocols for securing buildings.
  • Monitor, manage, and administer custodial closet inventory.
  • Submit and/or administer supply orders and ensure accurate reporting, proper use, and adequate supply levels.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of custodial equipment.
  • Administer all equipment inventory (assets and non-asset), keep up-to-date records and reports as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
