About The Position

The Massachusetts Horticultural Society (MHS) is seeking a part-time, non-exempt, non-supervisory Custodial Associate for evening and weekend shifts. This role is crucial for supporting the Garden at Elm Bank's busy calendar of public festivals, weddings, and special events. The primary focus is on event turnaround, ensuring the venue is clean and prepared before, during, and after events. This is not a standard Monday-Friday schedule, with the majority of shifts falling on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays, often during and immediately after events. The Custodial Associate works under the Director of Garden and Programs (DOGP) and is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and readiness of all public areas and facilities.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work approximately 3 weekend nights per week (primarily Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays).
  • Experience in cleaning, building maintenance, or event setup preferred.
  • Good attention to detail and strong communication skills.
  • Good time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to use heavy cleaning equipment and follow safety rules.
  • Able to work independently and with a team.
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts driver's license and car insurance.
  • Reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and clean up before, during, and after events and weddings on evenings and weekends.
  • Set up and take down tables, dance floors, and equipment.
  • Clean up during and after events and remove trash.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms and ensure they are stocked throughout events.
  • Sweep, mop, and handle spills in real time during events.
  • Keep outdoor areas and gardens free of litter during and after events.
  • Be present and available for the duration of event hours as needed.
  • Perform post-event cleaning of all buildings and public areas.
  • Vacuum, dust, deep clean, and sanitize public areas after events.
  • Clean and maintain all facilities and equipment.
  • Take out trash and recycling.
  • Follow the work schedule and procedures for each event.
  • Notice and take care of cleaning or maintenance needs as they come up.
  • Safely use and clean all equipment.
  • Follow all safety and health rules.
  • Keep track of supplies and request replacements when needed.
