About The Position

The Custodian Assistant fulfills the mission of the St. Jerome Parish in maintaining a neat, clean, safe, efficient, and organized environment for clergy, staff, parishioners, and visitors. The Custodian Assistant is responsible for assisting the Operations/Facilities Manager in the interior/exterior cleaning and upkeep of the buildings, floors, walls, furniture, fixtures, windows, machines, and equipment, as well as the seasonal demands of the church celebrations. The Custodian Assistant has decision-making responsibilities within essential job functions. The position is hired and evaluated by the Operations/Facilities Manager. Ministerial Character The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the St. Jerome Catholic Church Parish , which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. Positions employed at St. Jerome Catholic Church help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work with cleaning tools, power tools, and equipment used for the janitorial maintenance of the facilities.
  • Ability to understand technical language as it relates to facilities and operations.
  • Demonstrate good judgment.
  • Assist in cleaning the interior/exterior of the church campus facilities.
  • Ability to read and follow written and/or oral directions, instructions on procedures, and materials used in job duties.
  • Reasoning ability – capable of making good, sound decisions and an ability to apply training/tools necessary to achieve the position duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform physical duties as needed, which include lifting to 30 pounds and climbing ladders, etc.
  • Maintain and repair equipment as requested

  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.

Responsibilities

  • Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of St. Jerome Church in both your professional and personal life.
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
  • In charge of cleaning and upkeep of the buildings, floors, walls, furniture, fixtures, windows, machines, and equipment on the church grounds. This includes dust mopping, wet mopping, dusting, scrubbing, window cleaning, vacuuming, polishing, and emptying trash receptacles.
  • Responsible for inspecting and providing additional cleaning of the church and sanctuary in preparation for weekend services and special Holy Days of Obligation services.
  • Maintain VCT floors, which includes mopping and/or scrubbing, re-coating with wax as needed using various floor machines suited for the job at hand.
  • Maintain entrances (both internal and external) to the buildings to provide an overall cleanliness experience to parishioners and visitors when entering and exiting a building.
  • Responsible for inspecting building areas to see that all work has been done properly.
  • Have a clear understanding and use of cleaning materials and current practices including Hazmat and OSHA requirements for the safety of the parish community.
  • Monitor and make necessary adjustments/report and/or minor repairs to heating/cooling ventilation, plumbing, and electrical systems to assure infrastructure is in full operation (ex., air filter change).
  • Inspect the building and grounds and notify the Operations/Facilities Manager concerning the need for major repairs.
  • Request the order of inventory and maintain on-hand necessary cleaning and bathroom supplies as well as equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Able to work independently with other staff/personnel and maintain a good working relationship with the parish community and guests.
  • Respond to calls of inquiry and need for assistance in a timely fashion or within a reasonable amount of time.
  • Be able to work unsupervised.
  • Follow directions.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as identified by the Operations/Facilities Manager.
  • Attend parish staff meetings as directed by the Operations/Facilities Manager.
