About The Position

The Cultural Skills Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and facilitating culturally grounded activities that strengthen behavioral health, cultural identity, family relationships, and community wellness. This position integrates Omaha Tribal customs, traditions, language, history, and values into Behavioral Health programming to promote healing, resilience, and prevention.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be 19 years of Age or older.
  • Must self-identify as having lived experience as an individual with a mental health/substance use disorder or as a parent/caregiver to a child with a mental health/substance use disorder; for family peer support providers must have experience parenting a child/youth with a behavioral health challenge.
  • Must have certification as described by the Nebraska Division of Behavioral Health.
  • Must pass background check, physical, and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must agree to participate in all training required for peer support specialist through state of Nebraska, CPR, specific trauma informed care training required for behavioral health.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational, computer, and time management skills required
  • Must have high professional ethical standards and emotional stability.
  • Ability to use good judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to work with individuals with history of trauma and severe and pervasive mental illness.
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively in stressful situations.
  • Ability to comprehend, understand, and adhere to, at all times, the AMHC Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner, employing the basics of good grammar, punctuation spelling, sentence structure, and penmanship.
  • Ability to complete work assignments and reports in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to speak effectively and articulately, demonstrate good listening skills, and convey concern, understanding, and empathy.
  • Ability to confront potentially dangerous situations.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work in the mental health field and/or social services/social work is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate cultural programming for youth, adults, families, and Elders.
  • Coordinate cultural workshops, Talking Circles, language preservation activities, and traditional teachings.
  • Assist in organizing community cultural events including powwows, hand games, social dances, seasonal celebrations, youth camps, and wellness gatherings.
  • Collaborate with Omaha Tribal Elders, Knowledge Keepers, veterans, spiritual leaders, and community members to preserve and teach traditional knowledge.
  • Integrate cultural teachings into behavioral health prevention, treatment, recovery, and wellness activities.
  • Promote protective factors through cultural identity, belonging, traditional values, and community connectedness.
  • Assist Behavioral Health staff in developing culturally appropriate programming and activities.
  • Support youth leadership development through cultural mentoring and traditional teachings.
  • Encourage family participation in cultural activities to strengthen relationships and intergenerational healing.
  • Assist with suicide prevention, substance use prevention, grief support, and community healing activities through culturally grounded approaches.
  • Develop partnerships with schools, Tribal programs, community organizations, and neighboring agencies to expand cultural opportunities.
  • Maintain activity records, attendance logs, program reports, and documentation required by grant funding and departmental policies.
  • Assist with purchasing, organizing, maintaining, and inventorying cultural supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure cultural activities are conducted respectfully and in accordance with Omaha Tribal customs and protocols.
  • Participate in Behavioral Health staff meetings, trainings, and community outreach activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
