About The Position

SWCA Environmental Consultants seeks two to four Cultural Resources Field Technicians for temporary, hourly, non-exempt, field-based assignments with its Midwest cultural resources team. Technicians will participate in cultural resource management projects across Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and/or Indiana, including solar energy and local government projects. The anticipated schedule is 40–50 hours per week. Candidates located in the Midwest are encouraged to apply for priority consideration.

This position is entirely field-based. Assignments involve archaeological survey and field testing in potentially rugged terrain and inclement weather. Hours worked over 40 per week are paid at time-and-a-half. SWCA pays directly for single-occupancy hotels, provides vehicles for projects, and offers per diem of up to $68 for full-day assignments unless project details specify otherwise. The position offers an opportunity for advancement within SWCA.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field, or be working toward completion of one of these degree programs.
• Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
• Ability to travel to a work location and conduct fieldwork for long hours while walking, sometimes in inclement weather, including extreme heat and humidity, and on rugged terrain.
• Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing 25–50 pounds.
• A current valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads.

Nice To Haves

• Master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
• Six or more months of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, methodology, and monitoring.
• Knowledge of Collector and Survey123.

Responsibilities

• Perform archaeological surveying and field testing, including shovel test pits and excavation units.
• Complete field documentation, including forms, digital photography, in-field mapping, and GPS data collection, under the supervision of a Field Lead or Project Archaeologist.
• Follow the safety program, look out for the safety of others, and promptly communicate and mitigate safety hazards.
