About The Position

The CTE Academy is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Culinary Arts/Restaurant Management Teacher to join our faculty for the 2026-27 school year. The ideal candidate will be responsible for instructing students in culinary arts and restaurant management education pathways, preparing them for postsecondary education and careers in the food service and hospitality industry. This position blends academic instruction with hands-on learning and career readiness skills aligned with State Career and Technical Education standards. Candidates should have experience in culinary arts, food service operations, restaurant management, industry certifications, or a related field.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and endorsements in the areas of teaching assignment.
  • Current, valid South Dakota teaching certificate.
  • Successful student teaching.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management.
  • Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of technology to enhance student learning.
  • Valid South Dakota teaching certification with endorsements in the assigned content area.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree (unless pursuing a CTE Instructor position under Alternative Certification).
  • Must obtain Alternative Preliminary Certificate BEFORE applying for teaching position if pursuing Alternative Certification.
  • Completion of at least one hour of approved youth suicide awareness and prevention training every five years.
  • Must provide most recent certificate of completion for youth suicide awareness and prevention training prior to starting employment.

  • Experience in culinary arts, food service operations, restaurant management, industry certifications, or a related field.
  • Experience with ProStart curriculum.
  • Experience preparing students for ServSafe certification.
  • Experience supervising student participation in catering events, school-based enterprises, and culinary competitions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans focused on ProStart curriculum, culinary techniques, food safety and sanitation, nutrition, baking and pastry arts, restaurant operations, customer service, and hospitality management.
  • Provide hands-on instruction in commercial kitchen operations and industry-standard culinary practices.
  • Prepare students for industry-recognized certifications such as ServSafe.
  • Supervise and manage student participation in catering events, school-based enterprises, and culinary competitions.
  • Coordinate and supervise field trips, job shadowing experiences and guest speakers with industry partners.
  • Collaborate with other educators, counselors, and industry professionals to support student success and career readiness.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and professional kitchen and classroom environment.
  • Plan instructional tasks that are meaningful and related to learning goals.
  • Implement District curriculum.
  • Maintain a strong instructional focus utilizing the elements of effective instruction.
  • Communicate a high level of expectation.
  • Communicate clear learning goals to students.
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Address various learning styles.
  • Sequence content at an appropriate pace.
  • Use appropriate level of questioning to promote understanding.
  • Relate lesson content to prior and future learning.

  • Conduct ongoing assessments for learning.
  • Establish appropriate classroom rules and procedures that are clearly understood by all students.
  • Effectively and consistently enforce rules and follow procedures.
  • Redirect students naturally and immediately without disrupting others.
  • Be well-organized and have all materials, equipment, etc., ready for immediate use.
  • Carry out smooth and effective transitions (e.g., from one activity to another, as students enter and leave the room).
  • Maximize time on purposeful instructional tasks.
