TBO - CTO Functional Strategy Manager

GSK•Philadelphia, PA

About The Position

The CTO Functional Strategy Manager develops and maintains the functional and operating model strategy for DPTF. The role translates GSK's strategy and digital and technology priorities into implications for the function, co-creating a north star vision with architecture and domain leadership, scanning the market and state of the art, and aligning DPTF's major initiatives to the strategic direction. The position aligns the functional strategy with the technology strategy and roadmap owned by the Chief Architect; it does not own those. The role communicates DPTF's strategy to leaders across GSK and engages those leaders to understand what they need from the function, ensuring the strategy reflects the demands placed on DPTF. It also embeds the function's reliability and AI acceleration ambitions in its strategy and uses AI tools to support research, synthesis, and preparation of strategy materials. This is a hybrid role combining on-site collaboration and remote working. Specific office and remote expectations will be discussed during the interview.

  • Experience translating enterprise strategy into functional objectives and OKRs.
  • Experience synthesizing complex and incomplete information into a clear position leaders can act on.
  • Experience scanning market and technology developments and assessing their relevance to a specific organisation.
  • Experience engaging and influencing senior leaders across organisational boundaries, including facilitating strategy workshops and leadership reviews.
  • Experience producing executive-level strategy materials and narrative.
  • Familiarity with AI tools applied to research, synthesis, and production of strategy material.

Nice To Haves

  • Postgraduate study or professional certification in strategy, business, or technology management.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, with the ability to work from ambiguity to a clear and defensible position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including producing narrative and materials for an executive audience.
  • Strong influencing and facilitation skills, including the ability to run workshops with senior leaders and build shared views across architecture, domains, and wider GSK leadership.
  • Curiosity and breadth to track technology and market developments and judge which are relevant.
  • Comfort working without direct authority on a strategy co-owned across the function.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the DPTF functional strategy, translating GSK's strategy and digital and technology priorities into what the function needs to be and do.

  • Align the functional strategy with the technology strategy and roadmap owned by the Chief Architect, keeping them coherent as they evolve.
  • Scan the market, industry, and state of the art in technology, operating models, and ways of working, including developments at comparable organisations and key technology partners; assess relevance to GSK and incorporate relevant findings into the strategy.
  • Translate strategy into functional objectives and OKRs, and maintain the strategic planning cadence through which they are set and reviewed.
  • Assess DPTF's major initiatives against the north star, identify portfolio gaps, and raise them through governance.
  • Communicate DPTF's strategy to leadership across GSK by producing clear and credible materials and narrative.
  • Engage leaders across GSK to understand their needs from DPTF and feed those requirements into strategy and planning.
  • Facilitate strategy workshops, planning sessions, and leadership reviews with architecture and domain leadership.
  • Develop strategic recommendations and options for leadership review, articulate trade-offs, and prepare briefings and materials for the Head of Technology Business Operations, the CTO, and the DPTF Leadership Team.
