About The Position

Capital Health is seeking a full-time CSP Technician for the Hamilton Surgery Center. This role is responsible for the decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and equipment, ensuring adherence to infection control standards and manufacturer recommendations. The technician will utilize a computerized tray tracking system, select appropriate sterilization methods, assemble surgical case carts, manage instrument inventory, and maintain a safe work environment. Additionally, the position involves precepting new employees and serving as a resource person.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • One year related experience.
  • CRCST or certified through national sterile processing program recognized by New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize surgical instrumentation and equipment using proper infection control techniques.
  • Follow manufacturer's recommendations and AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Perform decontamination functions for surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Perform assembly of surgical instrumentation and equipment and prepare them for sterilization.
  • Utilize features of a computerized tray tracking system.
  • Correctly select appropriate sterilizer method and parameters.
  • Assemble surgical case carts.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Manage instrument inventory to assure timely distribution of instruments to the operating room.
  • Precept new employees and act as a resource person.
  • Prepare instruments for decontamination by properly sorting and selecting correct process to assure integrity and prevent damage to rigid instruments, power instruments, flexible scopes, and any surgical equipment being processed.
  • Prepare instrumentation for exposure of all surfaces to decontamination process by flushing and opening all lumens, disassembling and opening all items, and properly loading of mechanical washers.
  • Follow all manufacturer's recommendations as required.
  • Wear appropriate PPE equipment in the performance of the decontamination process as outlined in the department policies and procedures.
  • Operate all washers, sterilizers, sonics, and all other equipment in a proper and safe manner.
  • Employ appropriate safe use of all cleaning agents and chemicals.
  • Follow manufacturer's instructions for operation of all equipment located within the department including washers, sonics, Sterrad, Steris, and flash sterilizers.
  • Perform biological and diagnostic tests on sterilizers and provides accurate timely documentation of results.
  • Notify supervisor of any malfunctions and initiates repairs as needed.
  • Appropriately triage instrumentation and equipment to meet customer needs.
  • Communicate effectively status of instrumentation and equipment to customers.
  • Inspect instruments and assures they are free of bio-burden and in proper working condition prior to assembling sets.
  • Initiate repairs and performs required maintenance as needed.
  • Assemble correctly sets following count sheets, replaces missing instrumentation, and identifies missing items as appropriate and notifies supervisor immediately regarding critical items.
  • Wrap, pack, and label all items correctly in accordance with department polices and procedures.
  • Use correct selection of appropriate sterilization method and sterilization parameters.
  • Use the appropriate indicators and integrators for the method selected.
  • Load sterilizer carts correctly and records all items on log.
  • Label items correctly and signs all work produced.
  • Assemble case carts with correct items following PPF.
  • Check off items placed on cart and indicates items missing.
  • Place heavy items on top shelf and solutions on bottom shelf.
  • Place clean cover on cart and attaches PPF.
  • Sign off on all work produced.
  • Assure cart is clean and in good condition.
  • Initiate any repairs as needed.
  • Maintain, clean, and sign off all assigned areas according to schedule.
  • Rotate supplies and trays to assure oldest items are used first.
  • Verify integrity of sterile packaging materials of stored items.
  • Monitor any expiration dates and removes expired items.
  • Clean and stock work station at end of shift.
  • Monitor, prepare, replenish, and rotate stock to maintain proper levels of surgical instrumentation and stock.
  • Monitor inventory of department specific supplies and notifies supervisor when levels are getting low and replacement is needed.
  • Organize and keep up to date specialty instrument lists.
  • Evaluate proper levels of instrument supply and replacement stock.
  • Communicate to Supervisor need for orders.
  • Participate in processing and tracking of loaner instrumentation.
  • Obtain as needed and follow loaner instrumentation guidelines.
  • Communicate status of loaner items to all appropriate parties.
  • Instruct and assist new employees in learning departmental practices and procedures in preparation of instrumentation.
  • Act as mentor to new employees and a resource to all.
