About The Position

DMC Harper University Hospital is seeking a CSP Operating Room team member to coordinate oversight of surgical instruments and supplies between the operating room and Central Sterile Processing (CSP). The role helps ensure requested items are available and supports efficient case flow. It also assists with special projects and process improvement initiatives, and promotes customer service and satisfaction through training, education, communication, and issue resolution. Duties must comply with hospital, TJC, CMMS, FDA, AORN, AAMI, and other applicable hospital and department policies and procedures. DMC Harper University Hospital is a specialty referral hospital recognized for clinical expertise and innovative research, with Centers of Excellence in neurosciences, bariatric surgery, vascular services, multidisciplinary cardiovascular services, hypertension, stroke prevention, and heart failure.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to read, write, and comprehend English.
Three years of Sterile Processing Technician experience; five years preferred.
Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with hospital personnel and outside vendors.
Knowledge of surgical instruments, cleaning, and sterilization processes.
Understanding of the care and handling of surgical instrumentation.
Ability to push and pull objects weighing up to 450 pounds and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to provide a high level of technical computer support and use.
Ability to use Windows-based applications such as Excel and Word, and other software needed to perform job functions.

Nice To Haves

Associate degree preferred.
Five years of Sterile Processing Technician experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Verify that instrument trays are available before surgery case start times and assist OR staff in preparing the OR suite.
Transport sterile instruments and supplies to the operating room using appropriate standards and techniques, and check packages for compromised integrity.
Monitor case flow and instrument needs throughout the day, notify CSP personnel of anticipated additional or emergent needs, and resolve issues or offer alternatives when needed.
Help remove soiled case carts, unsterile instruments, and scopes from the operating room for return to CSP processing.
Plan and coordinate instrument turnarounds with CSP staff and communicate instrumentation information that may affect or delay surgery start times to the surgical team.
Verify that the next day's instrument needs have been cleaned, wrapped, sterilized, and made available for use.
Identify instruments that are broken, damaged, or not functioning as designed, and report issues to the CSP management team.
Suggest surgeon preference card changes to OR coordinators based on set usage to help ensure instrument availability.
Work with OR staff to identify instrument tray additions and reconfigurations and the creation of surgeon specialty sets; report recommendations to the CSP Manager.
Respond to problem calls from Surgery as required throughout the day.
Complete required daily audits of completed and post-operative case carts and provide audit sheets to the CSP data entry clerk.
Educate healthcare providers on receipt, inspection, inventory, storage, and distribution of instruments and medical supplies; specialty instrument function; resolution of common instrument function issues; and instrument maintenance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
