About The Position

Reporting to the Foreman, Quality and Measurement, the Crude Quality Technician supports crude quality, measurement, and risk management at Marten Hills/Slave Lake by completing sampling, analysis, equipment verification/calibration, and reporting activities. This role ensures timely accurate quality data and will assist in executing a crude quality program by learning new technologies pertaining to crude quality specifications, maintaining monitoring equipment, and performing daily field sampling and analysis of crude oil products in accordance with industry-standard protocols.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Oilfield, terminal, or facility operations experience with strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience with laboratory, analytical, and/or measurement equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data integrity and documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; able to work independently with minimal supervision and contribute effectively to a team.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Safety-focused with sound judgment; willing to obtain and maintain required industry certifications.
  • Working knowledge of ASTM and API standards, and applicable regulations (e.g., Alberta Energy Regulator Directive 017).
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and ability to travel within the area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Complete routine and event-based crude sampling and analysis to support quality and custody transfer (e.g., vapor pressure, viscosity, sulphur, C4, and other required tests).
  • Monitor incoming and outgoing crude quality (including LACT quality) and proactively identify shifts that could impact quality, custody transfer, or commercial obligations.
  • Verify results through validation checks and comparisons with third-party laboratory data.
  • Document, trend, and communicate results, risks, and recommendations to Operations, Oil Movements, and Marketing.
  • Support shipping, crude movement, and optimization activities in accordance with Kingston procedures and the Measurement Manual.
  • Coordinate internal SME and external vendor support for equipment issues; assist with maintenance, housekeeping, and facility upkeep to support safe operations.
  • Support third-party meter proving/calibration and complete verification/calibration for the TMS truck unload system (as applicable).
  • Provide day-to-day support to the Operations team.
