About The Position

Under the direction of the Campus Principal, the School Crossing Guard is to aid children crossing streets, walking to and from school. Duties include holding a sign and blowing a whistle to control traffic and escorting elementary school children safely across various streets and intersections. Duties will require working outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Schedule and assignment locations may vary and will work split shifts. Schedules will occasionally vary to accommodate early dismissal days and school holidays. The Guard must remain on their post for the full shift to receive payment for a shift worked.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense, problem solving and mediation skills, and a mature attitude to a variety of situations.
  • Must be able to hold stop sign above head until children are across the intersection.
  • Must be able to blow whistle to alert traffic to presence of children.
  • Ability to communicate with people in a professional manner.
  • Ability to make quick and sound judgments in a fast-paced environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid (Class C) driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk quickly, hear, speak clearly, occasionally speak/hear over the sound of traffic and work in inclement weather.
  • Required to work outside with exposure to the elements, fumes and/or outdoor particles.
  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to grasp, handle or feel; and talk or hear.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • CPR training preferred or willingness to become certified.

Responsibilities

  • Assists elementary school children in crossing the street at designated intersections in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Positions themself in a highly visible and safe location.
  • Stands on the side of the street where the children approach if possible.
  • Uses a lawn chair during periods when the peak flow of pedestrian traffic has slowed, while remaining in a position where they are easily observed by pedestrians seeking to cross the street and able to observe anyone approaching the cross walk.
  • Uses their vehicle for shelter during extremely inclement weather if necessary.
  • Places traffic cones in the street before school begins and removes at end of school as needed.
  • Recognizes gaps in traffic and steps safely into and out of traffic.
  • Notifies police headquarters of real or potential hazards and pedestrian accidents in the vicinity.
  • Gets to and from designated assignments.
