About The Position

La Jolla Country Day School seeks an enthusiastic, high-energy Cross Country coach for our Middle School team during the Fall 2026 season. This coach will lead and develop a positive, inclusive running program for student-athletes in grades 7 and 8. Responsibilities include planning and conducting practices, teaching proper running techniques, promoting sportsmanship and teamwork, supervising athletes at practices and meets, communicating with students and families, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Middle School coaches must be available on School days beginning at 2:00 pm for practice with their team, and will travel with the team to any away competitions. LJCDS has a long-standing tradition of athletic excellence, with a nationally recognized program that develops student-athletes both in competition and in character. Our athletics program enriches the educational experience by offering a wide variety of team and individual sports that emphasize sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. Requirements

  • Coaching and/or playing experience, preferably at the high school or college level
  • Energetic, punctual, and committed to team success
  • Builds strong relationships with athletes, families, and colleagues
  • Embraces LJCDS’s values of dignity, respect, and inclusion
  • High school diploma required
  • Experience as a cross country or track & field athlete
  • Experience coaching and developing a running program
  • Must pass a Live Scan background check and provide current TB clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred
  • NFHS Coaching Education certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate practices that develop endurance, running technique, and a love of the sport
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, character, and personal growth
  • Teach and reinforce the fundamentals of cross country while promoting safe training practices
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team activities, ensuring their safety and well-being
  • Prepare athletes for league and postseason competition through effective instruction and thoughtful race preparation
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm
  • Manage equipment, uniforms, and administrative needs
  • Participate in team events such as Parent Night and award ceremonies
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, and school administrators regarding schedules, expectations, and team updates
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Department and fellow coaches to support the mission and values of La Jolla Country Day School
  • Encourage academic success, leadership, and personal responsibility alongside athletic achievement
  • Ensure compliance with all school, league, and CIF rules, policies, and procedures

Benefits

  • Hourly rate: $20-25, commensurate with experience
