Under the supervision of the Medical Director and Lifeguard EMS Program Coordinator, the Critical Care Paramedic provides patient care, supports training and research, and uses and maintains equipment in accordance with established policies and procedures. The role includes maintaining clinical skills and knowledge of relevant literature; assisting with the development of training curricula, research protocols, and patient-care procedures; and supporting program development and outreach. The paramedic’s role does not supersede the RN’s role in patient care after responsibility for a patient has been transferred to the RN. The position provides emergency and critical-care transport services, participates in education and research, and completes related documentation and operational tasks. The work takes place in variable in- and out-of-hospital settings, including emergency, disaster, training, and clinical simulation environments. It requires travel in ambulances and other vehicles, as well as aircraft, and may include travel to conferences. The position responds to on-call emergencies, disasters, and major incidents and works rotating 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Driving is required; the position has no supervisory responsibility. Brown University Health employees are expected to model the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence and its core Success Factors: Instill Trust and Value Differences, Patient and Community Focus, and Collaborate.
