About The Position

The Crisis Intervention Specialist II (CIS II) plays a crucial role within a team process, focusing on developing strength-based relationships with clients experiencing mental health or behavioral crises. This position involves intervening with individuals exhibiting behaviors such as agitation, aggression, active psychosis, suicidal ideation, and self-injury. As a CIS II, you will take on an increased leadership role, coaching and training other Crisis staff in essential and advanced skills, including facilitating crisis trainings, shadowing new specialists, and providing coaching on de-escalation techniques. The role requires shift-based work, responding to community or Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) based crises on immediate emergency requests. This may involve joint responses with law enforcement, screening for dangerous situations, and linking individuals to community resources. You will also be responsible for searching for and engaging natural supports, assisting with transitions and transportation to the lowest level of care needed, and working independently in homes and various community/treatment settings. Certification in restraint protocols may be required.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of relevant experience as a Healthcare/Medical - Social Worker, or equivalent combination of education and experience (two years of relevant experience equals one year of education).
Speak, read, and/or write another language may be required by some programs/areas.
Must remain physically fit enough to keep clients self-safe.
Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Requires full background check and TB Exam.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates mastery of the Crisis Intervention Specialist 1 Job Description.
Provides advanced skills support to the MH crisis hotline by modeling and coaching Crisis Intervention Specialist I in gathering information, supporting callers, and identifying needs related to current crisis situations. May provide phone stabilization and resourcing as needed.
Provides crisis assessment and de-escalation of adults or youth experiencing an acute MH or behavioral crisis who may be presenting as a danger to themselves or others.
Demonstrates ability to train others in the process of information gathering and decision-making related to involuntary psychiatric holds under Lanterman Petris Short laws and regulations.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge in providing direct billable mental health services, documenting in alignment with MediCal regulations, and achieving set productivity expectations. Exhibits advanced knowledge in coaching others in the use of the electronic health record. Maintains audit-ready progress notes.
Models expert techniques in engaging and supporting family members and other natural supports during an acute psychiatric crisis, including psychoeducation on deescalation strategies and securing home environments (e.g., weapons, dangerous items, substances).
Coaches others in the workflow of transporting individuals on 5150 holds, including providing clinical information to accepting hospitals or CSU/other psychiatric facilities. Remains with the client until transport has arrived and the client is safely en route to the accepting facility.
Leads and assists individuals in identifying triggers, unmet needs, and psychosocial factors contributing to ongoing acute MH crisis. Utilizes a strengths-based approach to develop a comprehensive risk management and safety plan to support client stabilization.
Provides linkage, referrals, and resources in the community based on identified needs, which may include MH services, substance use services, housing supports, and other social services.
