About The Position

The Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is hiring Criminal Investigators at the GS-14 level in multiple locations. This is a non-status term appointment in the competitive service, not to exceed 5 years and 1 day; it may be extended based on agency needs. The position is at the full performance level. Reemployed annuitants may be eligible for a dual-compensation salary-offset waiver under specified circumstances, subject to the stated limitations. Criminal Investigators conduct and report on proactive and reactive investigations involving criminal misconduct. They interview suspects and witnesses, gather intelligence, conduct surveillance, prepare affidavits for court-approved search and seizure warrants and electronic intercepts, evaluate investigative techniques, advise on operational problems, and respond to inquiries about investigations and field matters. The work requires frequent travel, sometimes on short notice, and may involve long surveillance periods, pursuing or restraining suspects, and carrying heavy equipment. Investigators work indoors and outdoors in potentially dangerous and stressful situations, may be exposed to physical attack and lethal weapons, and must carry a firearm and maintain proficiency. The role requires a valid automobile driver's license and may require a pre-employment medical examination. Selected applicants must pass required background and drug screening; the position requires a Top Secret background investigation and may require polygraph testing. Applicants may identify one preferred Special Agent in Charge (SAC) office area of responsibility, but preferences are not guaranteed. Duty locations depend on agency needs; declining locations offered with the official job offer results in removal from further consideration. Retired applicants must have retired on or before the announcement's opening date, be under age 59, and enter on duty within 60 months of retirement. The announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies.
