About The Position

This position analyzes crime scenes to render an opinion as to the scientific value of all forms of evidence in order to identify, collect, record and preserve for future analysis. In addition, this position will also undergo training to analyze certain other evidence in order to render opinions as to the mechanism of the crime and for possible crime scene reconstruction.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, forensic sciences, chemistry, biology, geology or related physical or natural science from an accredited college or university.
  • Candidates may substitute experience in identifying, collecting, recording and preserving physical evidence at crime and disaster scenes on a year for year basis for the required education.
  • Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination, submission of a DNA sample, and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made.
  • Subject to random substance abuse testing.
  • Subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, are required to provide the agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Responsibilities

  • Process for the presence of latent evidence to include chemical enhancement and other scientifically proven methods to evaluate and render opinion as to the scientific value of latent impressions and prints.
  • Perform technical scale photography in accordance with scientific working group guidelines
  • Successfully complete annual proficiency tests to maintain accreditation to ISO 17025 and ANAB standards
  • Prepare clear, technically sound, accurate and informative reports
  • Categorize and label all evidence and enter pertinent information into the laboratory information management system (STARLIMS)
