Crime Scene Technician

About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to provide services throughout the processing of crime scenes for the Police Department. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: operating mobile crime scene lab; collecting and processing physical evidence; photographing crime scene; lifting, processing, classifying and identifying fingerprints; testifying in court; compiling reports, and maintaining and updating records for proper documentation.

Requirements

  • One year certificate from college or technical school in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Works with law enforcement to identify, isolate and secure crime scenes
  • Works with law enforcement to establish a restricted perimeter around a crime scene as to not compromise evidence
  • Works with law enforcement to define a clear set of restrictions regarding nonessential personnel and investigative personnel
  • Preserves, collects and records impressions, including toolmarks, footprints, tire marks, bite marks, and fingerprints
  • Collects DNA evidence, including blood, semen, hair, skin, blood stain patterns, bodily fluids, and nails
  • Collects trace evidence, including gunshot residue, fibers, accelerant, paint, glass, etc.
  • Collects firearms evidence, including weapons, spent casings, bullet fragments, cartridges, and gun powder patterns
