Locates, labels, collects and preserves physical evidence present at crime scenes, traffic fatalities and search warrants. Processes evidence and crime scenes for latent prints. Incumbents in this classification are required to respond to crime scenes based on a rotating on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Processes scenes for latent prints; identifies, documents and collects evidence; maintains detailed chain of custody. Photographs major crime scenes, traffic fatalities and other serious incidents. Processes evidence for latent prints using various chemical methods and Alternate Light Sources. Analyzes latent prints to determine value for identification; compares latent prints to suspects. Testifies in criminal courts as an expert witness. Fingerprints the public and potential employees for criminal background checks; fingerprints suspects and deceased for identifications; fingerprints defendants for criminal courts. Responds to open records requests and subpoenas for information. Assists other law enforcement agencies when requested; assists with criminal investigations when needed. Prepares and submits evidence to appropriate crime laborites for analysis. Completes detailed supplemental offense reports. Performs other duties as assigned.
