About The Position

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is seeking a Crime Scene Investigator to conduct major crime scene investigations. This role involves locating, identifying, preserving, photographing, and preparing evidence for laboratory analysis, while maintaining the chain of custody. The HCSO emphasizes stability, excellence, and high professional standards. This position offers a compensation range of $29.92-$45.92, with a starting salary range of $29.92-$37.92.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of crime scene investigations principles, practices, methods, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and county criminal laws and ordinances pertaining to the collection and use of physical evidence.
  • Working knowledge of fingerprint identification and preservation principles, practices, methods, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the functions, services, procedures, and regulations of the assigned division.
  • Working knowledge of photography practices and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of court proceedings and testimony.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct crime scene processing and investigations including performing tasks involving cadavers in various states of decomposition.

  • High school diploma or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Three years of crime scene investigation experience with a law enforcement agency.
  • OR An associate's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a major in biology, chemistry, criminal justice, crime scene technology, forensic science, or related field, and two years of crime scene investigation experience with a law enforcement agency.
  • OR A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education with a major in biology, chemistry, criminal justice, crime scene technology, forensic science or related field, and one year of crime scene investigation experience with a law enforcement agency.
  • OR Successful completion of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigator Trainee status.
  • Completion of pre-employment testing.
  • Attendance at the specified Sheriff's Office work location is required.
  • Depending on assignment, employees may be required to possess a valid Florida Driver License at time of employment.
  • Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
  • No visible tattoos on face, head, and neck. Tattoos determined to take away from the professional appearance of the Sheriff’s Office must be covered with an appropriate white, black, or neutral covering.
  • No illegal drug sale within lifetime.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months.
  • No marijuana use within the last 12 months.
  • No felony convictions within lifetime.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within lifetime.
  • No dishonorable discharge from any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserve Forces.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation including criminal, reference, employment, and neighborhood checks; polygraph; medical evaluation; and drug screening.
  • Live within Hillsborough County or within Citrus, Hardee, Hernando, Lake, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, or Sumter County as long as the residence is located within the 60-mile parameter of Falkenburg Road Jail at the time of appointment/employment (certified only).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct crime scene investigations to locate, identify, preserve, photograph, and prepare collected evidence for submission to crime laboratories for analysis.
  • Maintain the chain of custody for all evidence collected.
  • Photograph and videotape major crime scenes using digital cameras and video cameras with digital imagery.
  • Prepare cast impressions of footwear, tool, and tire impressions for later analysis and comparison.
  • Locate, develop, preserve, and collect latent prints at crime scenes using various techniques and equipment.
  • Prepare crime scene sketches by hand or using computer-aided drafting (CAD).
  • Attend autopsies to photograph, collect, document, and package evidence obtained from decedents.
  • Testify in depositions and court proceedings regarding crime scene investigations and evidence obtained.
  • Prepare crime scene investigation reports to document findings and involvement.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
