Under the direction of the Evidence Lead, this position is responsible for identifying, collecting, processing, and preserving crime scene and accident evidence to aid in criminal and civil prosecutions. Essential Job Functions include identifying, collecting, processing, and preserving crime scene and accident evidence; identifying, collecting, securing, and taking legal custody of fingerprints, fluids, fibers, tracks and other trace evidence. The role involves responding to calls for service and processing crime scenes, maintaining storage areas for property and evidence, and conducting in-service training for department personnel. The technician will thoroughly document crime scene details using specialized equipment, photograph evidence and scenes, collect surveillance videos, and process digital media. Responsibilities also include collecting, developing, preserving, comparing, classifying, and filing latent fingerprints, writing detailed reports, and maintaining secure custody of evidence. The position assists police officers with paperwork, organizes and catalogs evidence, and maintains computer records. The technician prepares and submits evidence for laboratory analysis, obtains evidence destruction orders, and coordinates with officers for evidence destruction or disposal. Additionally, the role involves conducting FCIC/NCIC warrant and Criminal History checks, assembling and organizing evidence for court presentation, attending court to present evidence and testimony, and signing out evidence to authorized personnel. The technician also assists other agencies in utilizing forensic evidence and performs other related duties as assigned.
