The City of High Point is seeking dedicated Crewmembers to join our Streets and Stormwater Division, where you’ll play a key role in maintaining and improving the city's infrastructure. We have opportunities across all of our essential areas, including Asphalt, Concrete, Mowing, Ditch Crew, Pipe Crew, and Street Sweeping (which requires a CDL). Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency on-call.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL Permit with a Tanker Endorsement within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with a Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
  • Medium to Heavy Work: Exerting moderate to significant force (20–50 pounds constantly, 100+ pounds with assistance) to operate small, motorized equipment and hand tools.
  • The role requires frequent walking, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, lifting, stooping, and stretching.
  • Sitting is rare.
  • Must demonstrate excellent hand-eye coordination and the ability to operate equipment requiring both hands and feet on control levers at all times.
  • Ability to turn head and body to angles of approximately 90 degrees while operating equipment to ensure safe movement.
  • Reaching: Extending hands and arms in any direction.
  • Handling: Grasping, holding, turning, or working with hands (without requiring intricate finger movement).
  • Manual Dexterity: Performing tasks using fingers for precise control (e.g., picking, pinching, or gripping).
  • Talking: Clear communication using spoken word to exchange ideas with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Hearing: Perception of sounds to ensure safety, including responding to mechanical warnings or verbal alerts during equipment operation.
  • Seeing: Clear vision to ensure safety and effective equipment operation: Acuity (Far): Ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more for safety when monitoring workers, equipment, traffic, and pedestrians.
  • Acuity (Near): Ability to see at close range for operating equipment controls and handling work aids.
  • Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space accurately to operate equipment and perform tasks safely.
  • Field of Vision: Ability to observe a broad area to monitor traffic, pedestrians, and workers.
  • Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision quickly from close work to distant surroundings to ensure safety.
  • Reasoning: Apply logical thinking to resolve work tasks, safety situations, and requests from supervisors or the public. Good judgment is crucial, particularly when working independently.
  • Mathematical Ability: Basic math skills to calculate quantities, determine material requirements, and apply formulas for chemical or paint mixtures.
  • Language Ability: Ability to speak, read, and write in English for safety manuals, instructions, formulas, and general communication.
  • Work in outdoor environments with exposure to hot and cold weather, rain, snow, flooding, and varied conditions.
  • Best suited for individuals comfortable with getting wet, dirty, or sweaty.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous conditions like high winds, debris, insects, and OSHA-regulated environments such as bloodborne pathogens.
  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment, including single-axle dump trucks, farm tractors, mowers, rollers, loaders, pavement breakers, chain saws, rakes, weed eaters, concrete saws, and other hand tools.
  • Candidates selected for employment must undergo (a.) a drug screening, in accordance with the City’s drug and alcohol policy and (b.) a background screening to determine whether there is any current, pending, or previous charge, conviction or other infraction deemed incompatible with service in the capacity for which the candidate is being hired.
  • Certain positions are considered so critical to the health and safety of others that a candidate cannot be placed in any such position without passing a pre-placement physical exam.

Responsibilities

  • Operate single-axle dump truck to transport materials like stone, sand, gravel, and supplies.
  • Use a light truck to carry tools and equipment to job sites.
  • Plow and salt streets during snow removal.
  • Asphalt and concrete maintenance and repair.
  • Operate large mowers to clear medians and rights-of-way.
  • Perform minor equipment repairs and routine servicing.
  • Assists with curb cutting and weed eating for special events.
  • Flag traffic for safety during operations.
  • Work in and around heavy traffic.
  • Operate medium and heavy equipment when cross-trained.
  • Handle general maintenance and labor tasks as needed.
  • Follows OSHA and City safety standards.
  • Clear debris from manholes and catch basins.
  • Assist with manual labor on projects, including digging, raking, and leveling trenches.
  • Help with the construction and repair of manholes and catch basins.
  • Perform general maintenance and labor as required.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and City safety standards.
