About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform supervisor/manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems. This role involves supervising and evaluating assigned staff, directing work, processing employee concerns, counseling, disciplining, and completing performance appraisals, as well as providing training and education. The supervisor oversees the work of semi-skilled and/or skilled workers, inmates, and equipment operators engaged in various repair, maintenance, or construction projects for county facilities. Responsibilities include inspecting facilities, organizing workload, monitoring progress, and inspecting completed projects. The role also coordinates equipment and material availability, operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment, and performs manual labor related to these tasks. Additionally, the position involves inspecting and performing basic maintenance on departmental machinery and equipment, cleaning and maintaining grounds and buildings, processing documentation, preparing and receiving forms and reports, and communicating via telephone and two-way radio.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the trade(s) required in the construction, maintenance and repair of the assigned area.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to construction, maintenance and repair of facilities within the assigned area.

  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in construction, maintenance and repair work related to the assigned area, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License.
  • Assignment to county landfill may require possession and maintenance of valid Landfill Operator Certification.
  • Positions which supervise the work of inmates require possession and maintenance of valid Certified Correctional Officer certification.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Requires the ability to speak with and/or signal people to convey or exchange mechanical and construction-related information, including giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants as well as communicating with the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the work of semi-skilled and/or skilled workers, inmates, and equipment operators engaged in the repair, maintenance or construction of roads/bridges, utility lines/facilities, landfill facilities, parks, grounds, or other county facilities.
  • Inspects facilities to identify necessary work; organizes/prioritizes departmental workload; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed projects.
  • Coordinates availability of equipment/materials needed for projects.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems.
  • Supervises and/or performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads bridges, and drainage systems.
  • Inspects departmental machinery and equipment for proper working condition and maintenance; supervises and/or performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment/machinery in good working conditions.
  • Cleans/maintains grounds and buildings of county facilities as needed; cleans/maintains areas around compactors and trash receptacles.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with departmental operations, per established procedures and within designated timeframes; distributes documentation or maintains records as appropriate.
  • Prepares and/or receives various forms, logs, reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
  • Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
