About The Position

This is skilled work in leading crews that are responsible for repairing, inspecting, constructing, and/or maintaining various city facilities and infrastructure. This includes work on gravity mains, manholes, raw water wells, water and sewer networks, storm sewers, catch basins, sidewalk repairs and replacements, asphalt and concrete applications, landscape and grounds keeping operations, and routine maintenance. The role involves monitoring and reporting on all work performed, working under general supervision. The City of Delray Beach is a Non-Tobacco Workplace and does not discriminate based on various factors.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Three (3) years of professional, verifiable experience in work specified in the General Purpose and Description.
  • Must have a Florida Driver's license with satisfactory driving record.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid Florida Driver's License, Class B, CDL, with airbrakes and tanker endorsements within six (6) months of hire (exceptions apply for certain divisions).
  • Water/Sewer Network Divisions: Must possess a Water Distribution Operator III License or higher issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
  • Knowledge of landscape and turf or water and sewer preventative maintenance.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions of the work.
  • Ability to prepare clear written reports and record keeping.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to supervise crews.
  • Skill in the safe use, operation, and maintenance of hand and power tools, trucks, pumps, and equipment.
  • Employees with a CDL performing DOT-regulated safety-sensitive activities are subject to drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to respond to supervision, guidance, and direction of superiors in a positive, receptive manner.
  • Appropriate grooming and attire to present a professional image.
  • Ability to report for work promptly and properly prepared.
  • Ability to notify the appropriate supervisor of intended absences.
  • Conform with standards and rules regarding use of accrued time.
  • Demonstrate a polite, helpful, and courteous manner when engaged with the public.
  • Ability to operate and care for equipment to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences.

  • Previous crew leader, foreman, or supervisor experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and instruct staff in installation, repair, and preventative maintenance in various assigned activities.
  • Prepare routine reports, written work orders, and maintain records.
  • Accurately relate daily assignment of work and review/discuss completed jobs with the crew.
  • Assist in training and ensure quality workmanship of the crew.
  • Coordinate work with other crews to maintain deadlines and safety practices.
  • May perform heavy manual functions.
  • May set up and operate laser and sight alignment and leveling tools.
  • May operate a mower, backhoe, end load, box-blade truck, or large dump truck.
  • Perform semi-skilled tasks in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, dry wall, concrete, tile and patch, air conditioning work, and safety inspections as assigned.
  • Move furniture and other objects; assist in normal clean-up activities as assigned.
  • Open facilities to set up chairs and tables for activities as assigned.
  • Foster positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
