About The Position

The Crew Chief is a working field leader responsible for leading and coordinating daily field operations within assigned city services (e.g., streets, grounds, parks, public utilities functional areas, drainage/stormwater, or meter systems). This position ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards. The Crew Chief serves as the primary point of contact between field crews and management and provides technical expertise, leadership, and direction in the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure and assets.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • 4–7 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, utilities, parks, or related field.
  • A valid Florida driver's license is required.
  • Strong knowledge of maintenance, construction, and/or utility operations.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team in a field environment.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices.
  • Skilled in equipment operation and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read work orders, maps, and technical documents.
  • Basic computer skills for reporting and data entry.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, electronically, and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work, establishes priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and discretion in resolving problems and/or conflicts.
  • Must establish and maintaining effective working relationships and dealing tactfully and persuasively with internal and external customers, the public and vendors.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and related documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • 1–2 years of lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • OSHA safety certifications preferred.
  • Depending on the department, relevant certifications (e.g., water distribution, pesticide application, traffic control) may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, assign, and monitor daily work activities of field crews.
  • Provide direction, training, and mentorship to assigned staff.
  • Evaluate work performance and report personnel issues to supervisors.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and high-quality service delivery.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work orders, projects, and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform and assist with skilled and semi-skilled labor as needed.
  • Ensure timely completion of work according to standards and schedules.
  • Adjust workflow based on environmental conditions, priorities, or emergencies.
  • Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA).
  • Conduct daily safety briefings (“tailgate meetings”).
  • Identify and correct unsafe work practices or hazardous conditions.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Operate and oversee use of tools, vehicles, and specialized equipment.
  • Inspect equipment and ensure proper maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitor inventory and request materials and supplies as needed.
  • Prevent loss, damage, or misuse of city property.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, labor hours, and materials used.
  • Complete reports, logs, and work orders using city systems.
  • Report incidents, accidents, and operational issues promptly.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries, complaints, and service requests.
  • Communicate project impacts (e.g., closures, disruptions) professionally.
  • Represent the department in a courteous and service-oriented manner.
  • Respond to after-hours call-outs and emergency situations.
  • Lead crews during storm response, utility outages, or public hazards.
  • Assist in disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.
  • Be available for after-hours work.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and provide administrative support to leadership as required.
  • Attend all meetings as required.
  • Maintain relevant certifications and stay updated on industry trends.
  • All other duties as required.
  • This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation.
  • Failure to appear to perform emergency management assignment and to work assigned shifts as scheduled by the City’s Emergency Management Director or individuals designated by the City Manager to assign such functions will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Benefits

  • Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined by the City Manager in the City’s Emergency Management Activation and Emergency Declaration.
