About The Position

The Underground Crew Leader position is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role involves working safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work on energized and de-energized underground systems. The Crew Leader supervises crew members, possesses a working knowledge of leadership and management skills, and is capable of leading and training lower-skilled employees in safe and productive work procedures. They are also responsible for leading and teaching underground services, infrastructure, and duct banks, conducting pre-job or tailgate briefings, and troubleshooting problems on underground circuits. This position frequently works with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect lives, and requires maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order. Compliance with company reporting procedures and completion of required paperwork are essential. The role involves coordinating and inspecting the work of crew members, performing rigorous physical labor, and identifying primary and secondary voltage on a circuit. Familiarity with induced voltage, tools for terminating cable, grounding procedures, and obtaining a one-shot on a reclosure is necessary. The position requires the capability to work in confined spaces, properly install and remove PPE and cover-up, test and classify soil, safely operate equipment, and phase out a line using phasing sticks. Planning safe work based on a job print or work order, understanding sloping and shoring requirements, and possessing knowledge of ladder requirements are also key. The ability to properly ask for and take line clearances, knowledge of line protection devices, and the ability to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE are required. Identifying and locating puller and tensioner setups is also part of the role, along with all other related work required to complete the job.
