Crate Builder / Packaging Support

OmnifyMarkham, ON
CA$20 - CA$23Onsite

About The Position

Omnify Lighting, a North American manufacturer of architectural back lighting systems, is seeking a skilled Crate Builder to join their packaging team. The primary responsibility is building custom wood crates to protect products during transit, involving measuring, cutting, and assembling using power saws, pneumatic tools, and hand tools. During slower periods for crate building, the role will involve general packaging work to support the team and keep production moving. Safety is paramount, with strict adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements expected. Training will be provided for tools if the candidate has a packaging-only background, but a strong commitment to safety is essential.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of prior experience in packaging and/or carpentry, ideally in a furniture or product-based manufacturing environment.
  • Comfort and confidence working with power saws, pneumatic tools (nail guns, staplers), and hand tools, or a clear willingness and aptitude to be trained on them safely.
  • Ability to measure products accurately and translate those measurements into a properly sized, well-built crate, without relying on a blueprint or pre-set spec.
  • Physical capability to lift and move heavy items using proper lifting technique.
  • High attention to detail; precision matters for both structural integrity and product protection.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to hit shared production and shipping deadlines.
  • Comfort identifying and troubleshooting issues that come up mid-build, rather than waiting to be told what to do.

Nice To Haves

  • JHSC (Joint Health and Safety Committee) certification or training
  • Experience building custom crates for fragile, high-value, or irregularly shaped products
  • Forklift certification

Responsibilities

  • Measure product being shipped and cut wood and other materials to build a crate sized specifically to fit it.
  • Assemble crate components using saws, drills, nail guns, pneumatic staplers, and other power tools.
  • Securely fasten crate parts with appropriate hardware.
  • Load and position products inside crates with proper cushioning and support.
  • Secure items using foam, bubble wrap, or bracing as needed.
  • Label crates with accurate shipping information.
  • Inspect finished crates for structural integrity, accuracy, and damage before final packaging.
  • Catch and report material or construction defects.
  • Make adjustments or repairs to maintain crate quality.
  • When crate-building demand is lower, work alongside the packaging team on general packaging and shipment-prep tasks to help the team hit production and shipping deadlines.
  • Follow all safety procedures related to power and pneumatic tools and material handling.
  • Wear required PPE at all times.
  • Adhere to company standards for crate construction and packaging materials.
  • Help spot and flag unsafe conditions before they become incidents.

Benefits

  • A challenging and rewarding role in a dynamic and growing company.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • A supportive team environment and a culture of innovation.
  • Competitive salary based on experience and benefits package.
