About The Position

These positions are within the Division of Maintenance and Operations and Traffic Operations Branch of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). The Traffic Operations Services Branch exists to improve the safety and efficiency of Colorado’s transportation system through institutionalized and forward leaning real-time operational excellence. This is accomplished through two primary program areas, the Operation Centers program and the Incident Response program. The Operation Centers program is focused on providing credible, real-time information to the department, first responders, and public. The Incident Response program is focused on providing expert traffic incident management, reducing roadway impacts, and protecting the lives of motorists and responders through coordinated and efficient incident response. The Crash Attenuator Operator positions are to ensure safe travel for the traveling public by operating equipment and providing traffic control when CDOT responds to highway incidents. All duties are performed with safety as the primary goal and to provide essential or emergency services that ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the traveling public on state highways. These positions provide exceptional internal and external customer service, continually learns and develops job knowledge to keep up with changes in procedures, technology, and priorities. The Crash Attenuator Operator positions must maintain operational readiness for snow events and other emergencies and may be placed on call.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of experience with vehicle operation to include one or more of the following in: Traffic Control, Incident Management, Transportation, Transportation Management, Emergency Management, Management, Safety Management or other work related to the major duties of this position.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
  • Must complete IS 100, IS 200 and IS 700 training within 3 months of employment
  • Must complete and obtain the Traffic Control Technican certification within 3 months of employment

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled physical work using appropriate tools and materials to achieve Division of Maintenance Operations (DMO) objectives, to ensure the safety of the traveling public, and to remove debris and obstruction as quickly as possible
  • Set up traffic control zones on the interstate and/or ramps by correctly deploying crash attenuator, traffic cones, and other items to close any necessary lanes
  • Move vehicle from the road by pushing it to the side, directing the motorist to move it, or keeping it safe for a tow truck
  • Clear crash scenes by removing debris, placing absorbent on the road for oil/gas leaks, and evaluating guardrail and other infrastructure for damage/ safety
  • Provide fuel, change tires, and give jumps to stalled vehicles
  • Pick up and deliver materials from the storeroom
  • Ensure tools are in safe operating condition. Perform and assist in maintaining and repairing tools
  • Maintain knowledge and skill in operating hand tools, including learning new pieces/types of tools and related technology
  • Obtain, maintain, and use certifications for, Traffic Incident Management (TIMS), traffic control technician and flagger
  • Perform physical labor such as bending, reaching, carrying, pounding, lifting, pulling, shoveling, raking, throwing, twisting, walking, stretching to achieve maintenance objectives
  • Safely and proficiently drive, operate, and maintain equipment such as truck mounted crash attenuators, and Truck Mounted VMS boards
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition. Complete pre- and post-trip inspections, via paper and electronically
  • Perform and assist in basic equipment maintenance and repair
  • Learn to operate and maneuver new pieces/types of equipment and related technology systems
  • Maneuver equipment safely in and out of hard to access locations and areas that have buildings, guard rail, slopes, trees, or hidden hazards
  • Operate technology systems in the equipment to help with operational decision-making, inspections, and maintenance. (example systems include Truck and Equipment Controller Systems, electronic fleet management systems, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) System, etc
  • Develop proficiency in operations in three key areas: equipment maintenance (pre/post trips, operators manual, proper servicing and cleaning), safety and environmental awareness (safe operations, situational awareness, environmental impact awareness, and equipment specific operating hazards), and effective operations (accomplishing specific tasks under field conditions)
  • Utilize laptop, radio, and a tablet based data collection system can be notified of incident locations, communicate with local responders and dispatch, and locate available resources
  • Update data collection system with data on each incident, such as what occurred on scene, what supplies were used, time spent en route and on scene, which agencies responded, information on the vehicles involved, VMS used, and cones used/hit. The data collection system maintains the data on all incidents
  • Notify the maintenance section if any guardrail or other structures are damaged and need repair
  • Assess emergency situations to determine appropriate action to take. Ensure supervisor is notified
  • Ensure interactions with internal and external customers are professional. Communicate effectively and professionally. Exhibit acceptance of diversity in providing effective customer service to diverse groups of internal and external customers
  • Provide assistance to the public during emergency situations. Take appropriate action to keep self and the public safe
  • Provide information, education, and guidance to supervisor, team members, dispatch, local responders, DMO, the public and Communications Office as needed
  • Take appropriate action when a complaint is received; ensure the supervisor is notified
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other resources within CDOT, such as maintenance, equipment shop
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with external entities, such as law enforcement, fire, municipalities, counties, and other state agencies
