About The Position

The Orange County Department of Social Services is seeking to fill a CPS Social Worker position in the area of Home and Permanency Planning. This role involves providing professional social work services for children and families experiencing child abuse, neglect, and/or dependency. Responsibilities include assessments/investigations, in-home services, or foster care/permanency planning. The successful candidate will have child welfare experience, strong social work, communication, critical thinking, and time management skills. This position requires rotational child welfare after-hours, on-call responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Social Work Supervisor III or Social Work Program Manager, with some latitude for independent judgment. Supervision is not required for this class. Bilingual applicants fluent in English and Spanish are encouraged to apply. The hiring range is determined by the Orange County Social Services Step Plan, which is based on years of CPS Social Worker experience. Full credit is given for direct experience, and partial credit for related experience. The upper portion of the salary scale is reserved for career employees with senior-level experience in the same role. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program and a SBI background check.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in social work AND one (1) year of social work experience; OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social work AND two (2) years of social work experience; OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in any field AND four (4) years of direct social work experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle operated.
  • Successful clearance of a pre-employment drug test and background check.
  • Fingerprinting and a criminal history background check may be required.
  • Satisfactory verification of eligibility for employment.
  • Successful completion of required pre-employment testing and/or screening, including drug testing when required.
  • Submission and approval of all new hire documentation and completion of new hire paperwork.

Responsibilities

  • Providing professional social work services for children and families where child abuse, neglect and/or dependency have occurred.
  • Conducting assessments/investigations.
  • Providing in-home services.
  • Performing foster care/permanency planning.
  • Performing rotational child welfare after-hours, on-call responsibilities.
  • Assisting with disaster management during major weather and other disaster events (e.g., staffing shelters, assisting with special outreach and prevention activities, assisting with recovery efforts).
  • Serving in shelters in time of natural and man-made disasters, including overnight and weekends.
  • Potentially filling a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours, and/or work location.
  • Being available for after-hours coverage when needed to meet the needs of caseload assignments.
