About The Position

The Fairbanks In-Court Division is seeking highly dependable individuals to become Courtroom Judicial Assistants. Employees transferring from another State of Alaska agency or applicants with prior legal work experience or education in the legal field may receive consideration for advance step placement. Personnel rules will be applied to determine step placement for the successful internal candidate. The mission of the Alaska Court System is to provide an accessible and impartial forum for the just resolution of all cases that come before it, and to decide such cases in accordance with the law, expeditiously and with integrity. Requirements

  • Experience handling stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Experience dealing with high-priority, confidential, or sensitive information.
  • Experience or knowledge of legal procedures.
  • Experience preparing professional documents and applying rules and regulations when processing documents.
  • Experience performing multiple tasks with frequent interruptions and remaining calm, organized, and accurate.
  • Experience working positively and productively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience level (50+ wpm) or expert level (60+ wpm) keyboarding proficiency.
  • Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate.
  • One year of office clerical experience.
  • Ability to keyboard at least 40 words per minute (net).
  • Keyboarding certification dated within one year showing a keyboarding speed of at least 40 words per minute (net).
  • Post-secondary transcripts, if using education to meet minimum qualifications.
  • A list of three (3) professional references who have had supervisory authority over you, including your most recent supervisor, along with their daytime contact phone numbers and email addresses.
  • Two (2) writing samples each at least one page in length.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced in-court case management and courtroom clerk duties in support of judicial proceedings.
  • Prepares courtrooms for daily hearings and trials.
  • Operates and monitors digital recording systems.
  • Administers courtroom documentation.
  • Manages exhibits, witness lists, and jury materials.
  • Maintains accurate case records.
  • Enters and updates case information in electronic case management systems.
  • Calendars hearings.
  • Issues and processes court orders, warrants, and dispositions.
  • Ensures compliance with court rules, statutes, and established procedures.
  • Coordinates with judges, attorneys, law enforcement, correctional facilities, jurors, and the public to facilitate efficient courtroom operations.
  • Processes post-hearing documentation.
  • Prepares records for appeal.
  • Responds to records requests.
  • Maintains courtroom supplies and exhibits.
  • Processes criminal charging documents.
  • Supports arraignments.
  • Provides cross-coverage for other court functions.
  • Travels to outlying locations as needed.
  • Works extended, weekend, holiday, or on-call hours to meet the operational needs of the court.
