About The Position

This position involves technical work as an Official Court Reporter for the 11th Judicial District in Kalispell, MT. The role is responsible for capturing and preserving a verbatim record of court proceedings using computerized recording equipment or a stenograph machine and computer-aided transcription software. The court reporter will set up equipment, conduct sound checks, monitor operation, and dismantle recording equipment or stenograph machines in various locations as directed by the judge. They will maintain a complete record of all verbal communications, ensure an intelligible record including nonverbal incidents, and remind parties to speak clearly. The reporter will locate and read or play back portions of proceedings upon request, maintain a high level of concentration, and utilize computer equipment and software for transcript preparation. This includes transcribing, proofreading, certifying, and distributing official transcripts. The position also involves providing court reporter coverage for other judges within the assigned district and staying current on computerized court reporting technology. Communication with litigants and the public regarding transcript requests and providing administrative support as assigned by the judge are also key duties. Work is performed primarily in a courtroom, hearing room, conference room, judge's chambers, or officer setting, or recorded by Zoom or another electronic audio-visual platform. Travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Graduates of a post secondary court reporting (Stenography) program approved by the NCRA and the Montana Supreme Court.
  • Experience as an official court reporter in a courtroom setting.
  • Excellent typing skills.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot computerized recording systems.
  • Ability to produce transcripts.
  • Understanding of court procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Capturing and preserving a verbatim record of court proceedings using computerized recording equipment or a stenograph machine and computer-aided transcription software.
  • Setting up equipment, conducting sound checks, monitoring operation, and dismantling recording equipment or stenograph machines in courtroom, conference rooms, judge's chambers, or other locations as directed by the judge.
  • Maintaining a complete record of all verbal communications and ensuring an intelligible record including nonverbal incidents in the proceedings.
  • Reminding parties, as necessary, to speak clearly and on at a time to ensure the integrity of verbatim record.
  • During proceedings, upon request of the judge or litigants, locating and reading or playing back portions of proceedings.
  • Maintaining a high level of concentration and attentiveness throughout all court proceedings, regardless of disruptions and other unpredictable and adverse conditions.
  • Utilizing computer equipment and software for preparation of transcripts.
  • Transcribing, proofreading, certifying, and distributing official transcripts.
  • Providing court reporter coverage for other judges within assigned district and other judges sitting on proceedings held in assigned district.
  • Remaining current on computerized court reporting technology.
  • Communicating with litigants and public regarding requests for official transcripts.
  • Providing administrative support as assigned by the judge.
