About The Position

Oakland County is seeking a Court Deputy to maintain safety and order within Oakland County’s courts and government facilities. This role involves interacting with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public, and plays a critical role in protecting the safety of court personnel, visitors, and the public. The position offers a dynamic environment where every day brings new situations and challenges, and the opportunity to be part of a professional law enforcement team dedicated to maintaining order and security within the justice system. Requirements

  • Be a High School graduate or have certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development Test (GED).
  • Have at least two (2) years of full-time experience as a police officer, military, corrections, or Federal Law Enforcement officer; OR
  • a. Have at least one (1) year of full-time work experience as an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputy; OR
  • b. Possess current MCOLES license OR be currently attending a Police Academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES); OR NOTE: Must have successfully completed the police academy and be eligible to be licensed prior to the date of hire.
  • c. Be an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy, Marine Deputy, Mounted Deputy, or Park Deputy and have completed 1,000 hours of service; OR
  • d. Successful completion of a Reserve Police Academy and completion of 1,000 hours of service.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.
  • Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law including domestic violence. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law. Generally, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatically disqualifying).
  • Have at least 20/20 corrected vision with both eyes and have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.
  • Have normal corrected hearing in each ear, per Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
  • Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.
  • Must maintain firearms qualification and deputy status.
  • Ability to guard an area for a full eight hour day, operate a motor vehicle, speak and give commands, perform inspections and deliver items.

  • Instrument rated in rotocraft or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Possess current Flight Instructor Certification in rotocraft or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain security at the Oakland County Courthouse, County Complex Buildings, Friend of the Court, and District Courts.
  • Screen visitors using x-ray machines, handheld metal detectors, and visual inspections of bags, purses, and packages to detect weapons or prohibited items.
  • Provide security within courtrooms, judges’ chambers, probation departments, cashier areas, and building perimeters including parking lots.
  • Respond to emergency situations and assist with maintaining order and making arrests when necessary.
  • Provide emergency first aid and initial fire response until appropriate emergency personnel arrive.
  • Monitor building activity and ensure compliance with courthouse security procedures.
  • Utilize Countywide and department-specific software systems to complete reports and other job duties.
  • Operate stationary x-ray machine and hand-held metal detectors to screen visitors for weapons and unauthorized objects.
  • Direct the flow of traffic through the inspection area.
  • Perform visual inspections of briefcases, purses, packages, etc., and examine these items using hand held metal detectors as necessary.
  • Check identification for individuals authorized to carry weapons.
  • Secure firearms in weapon storage areas or direct individuals to secure weapons and oversee this process.
  • Search individuals for concealed weapons and/or contraband.
  • Respond to disturbances and maintain order by warning individuals and apprehending disorderly persons.
  • Restrain individuals and assist in making arrests.
  • Respond to emergency situations in cases of illness, injury, or to prevent individuals from exiting the building or causing a disturbance.
  • Utilize a two-way radio to place and receive calls and request back up support as necessary.
  • Provide emergency first aid and/or CPR services until medical assistance arrives.
  • Provide security in probation departments, front lobby/cashier areas and outside perimeter of courthouse buildings including parking lots.
  • Patrol probation departments, front lobby/cashier areas and outside perimeter of courthouse buildings including parking lots.
  • Answer questions and provide directions and basic information to the public regarding judicial and other County offices located in the courthouse.
  • Utilize current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
