This course will explore miscarriages of justice which include wrongful convictions, arrests, and the persecution of the innocent. Topics will cover the primary factors that lead to a miscarriage of justice, which include Eyewitness Misidentification; False Confessions/Admissions of Guilt; Informants and Snitches; Misapplication of Forensic Science (Junk Science and White Coat Fraud); Police Misconduct (Tunnel Vision, Lazy Investigative Procedures, Perjury etc.); Prosecutorial and Judicial Misconduct; and Inadequate Defenses. Special consideration will be given to race and its impact on miscarriages of justice. Canadian cases may include Steven Truscott; Donald Marshall; David Milgaard; Guy Paul Morin, Thomas Sophonow and William Mullins-Johnson.
