About The Position

This course provides an exploration of quantitative research methods and data sources, as well as the opportunity for practical application of statistical techniques that will prepare students for research in academic or professional settings. This course builds on students’ existing knowledge in basic univariate description and correlation but assumes no existing knowledge of advanced statistical models. The focus of the course is providing opportunities for gaining experience and applied skills in quantitative methods, particularly in designing and conducting surveys and secondary data analysis, two key quantitative approaches in criminology. Students will be guided through a hands-on tour of SPSS statistical software package to learn data management, as well as techniques to conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (e.g., regression techniques). Students will learn how to interpret statistical output as well as how to best visualize and present statistical findings in writing, tables, graphs and figures.
