About The Position

As a County Equipment Manager with the Department of Transportation, you will guide the operation of a busy equipment program that supports vital transportation services. You will help coordinate repairs, track inventory, and manage staff to keep equipment in top condition. Your work supports safer roads and smoother operations across the county. This position oversees Lancaster County’s equipment program by managing maintenance schedules, supervising shop staff, and ensuring equipment is safe and dependable. It plays a key role in planning, repairs, and daily operations to support transportation needs.

Requirements

  • One year of experience as a Highway Equipment Manager 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines and other components of heavy highway maintenance and construction vehicles and equipment including two years of such experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class B or Class A Commercial Driver's License which is not under suspension with Air Brake restriction removed.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification by end of probationary period.
  • One year of experience or training in the repair or maintenance of diesel engines.
  • Must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must obtain Incidental Use (IU) certification for all fleet equipment within the probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare schedules and oversee preventative maintenance for equipment and buildings
  • Inspect fleet vehicles to determine needed repairs, replacements, or adjustments
  • Negotiate repair costs, ensure warranty compliance, and approve emergency part requests
  • Assign work, evaluate performance, identify training needs, and address personnel matters
  • Maintain equipment and tool inventories and coordinate equipment transfers between counties
  • Ensure garage buildings and grounds remain safe, clean, and well maintained
