About The Position

The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a seasoned, strategic, and solutions-driven County Attorney to lead the Office of the County Attorney. This position serves as the chief legal advisor to County leadership, providing counsel on complex municipal, legislative, and civil matters that influence the County’s long-term success. This position reports directly to the County Administrator; as well as provides legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners. The County Attorney leads and manages all operations of the County’s legal office, including supervising attorneys, paralegals, and support staff. They advise and represent the Board of County Commissioners, departments, boards, and agencies on legal and policy issues. The role involves developing and reviewing contracts, resolutions, ordinances, and legal opinions, and coordinating and overseeing outside counsel to ensure effective representation in litigation and specialized matters. The County Attorney also directs legislative affairs, drafting legislation, preparing testimony, and advancing the County’s legislative agenda with state and regional partners, while mitigating risk by anticipating legal and operational challenges and developing strategic, preventative solutions.

Requirements

  • A collaborative leader who can balance legal precision with strategic insight
  • Strong understanding of municipal law, public policy, and government operations
  • Exceptional communication and analytical skills, with the ability to advise decision-makers under pressure
  • Proven experience managing complex legal projects and staff
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience, including significant management experience in government or related civil practice
  • License to practice law in the State of Maryland required
  • Subject to background investigation
