About The Position

Western State Hospital, part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, is seeking a full-time Counselor I. The hospital is a 302-bed, Joint Commission/CMS-accredited psychiatric facility in Staunton, Virginia, serving adults with serious mental health needs and offering a therapeutic clinical setting and psychosocial rehabilitation programs. The Counselor I develops and implements person-centered treatment and discharge plans in collaboration with consumers and interdisciplinary treatment team members. The role also connects the hospital’s treatment team with community agencies, families, and other people who support consumer recovery.

Requirements

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate or graduate social work program.
Professional work experience with adults with serious mental illness.

Responsibilities

Provide social work assessments and identify discharge needs.
Provide psychosocial rehabilitation interventions and participate in developing and implementing individualized treatment plans.
Complete social work assessments within seven days of admission.
Develop discharge plans that reflect working knowledge of the forensic service delivery system and mental health law.
Develop and maintain partnerships with community service providers.
Link the Western State Hospital treatment team with consumers’ families and other people who support recovery.
Complete clinical documentation according to requirements and time frames established by Joint Commission, CMS, and Social Work Department standards.
