About The Position

The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District is seeking a Part Time Pool - Counselor (Athletics) to join their team. This role is responsible for supporting the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of student athletes. The counselor will provide services related to transfer, vocational/occupational programs, career and academic skills development, and will have comprehensive knowledge of NCAA/NAIA eligibility standards, transfer requirements, recruitment processes, admission timelines, and academic planning strategies. The position involves teaching counseling courses, leading workshops, orientations, and seminars, and assisting in the development and implementation of retention programs. The counselor will also participate in planning support programs for student athletes in partnership with campus clubs and community groups, and is expected to actively participate in departmental and college committees. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments and is an in-person assignment.

Requirements

• Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR The equivalent.
• Experience and proficiency in educational, career, and personal counseling at a community college, university or clinical setting.
• Experience advising student athletes about certificates, associate degrees, and transfer requirements.
• Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal and crisis counseling.
• Ability to use technology in providing counseling services.
• Experience teaching career planning, college success, workshops or other personal development courses at the post-secondary level.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity backgrounds of community college students.

• Experience advising student athletes about certificates, associate degrees, and transfer requirements in accordance with NCAA, 3C2A, and NAIA.
• Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships between campus programs and community agencies.
• Experience that demonstrates active participation in community and professional organizations and institutions of higher education.
• An understanding of current theories and best practices related to supporting student success in the areas of basic skills, retention, academic goal completion, and transfer.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a generalist and a regular member of the Counseling Department faculty committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of student athletes.
• Provide counseling services related to transfer, vocational/occupational programs, career and academic skills development.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of NCAA/NAIA eligibility standards, transfer requirements, recruitment processes, admission timelines, and academic planning strategies that support student-athletes in transferring to four-year institutions.
• Assist student athletes and other students in developing and achieving their immediate and long-range academic and occupational goals.
• Teach counseling courses, lead workshops, orientations, and seminars.
• Assist in developing and implementing necessary retention programs to meet the program participant needs.
• Participate in the planning of support programs for student athletes, in partnership with on campus clubs, community, and other related advocacy and support groups.
• Actively participate on campus and within the broader community by serving on departmental and college committees.
• Take a leadership role in campus, community, and professional organizations.
• Perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the AFT contract.
