About The Position

The NTID Counseling & Academic Advising Services provides transitional counseling to support students' academic, personal, and career growth. They collaboratively work with the RIT Community to prioritize diverse, inclusive, and equitable services. This role works with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing in a college environment, following the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics. The position is part of a career ladder that includes Counselor/Academic Advisor, Senior Counselor/Academic Advisor, and Assistant Director. Salary and placement on the career ladder and assignment will be determined by experience, professional licensure, certification, and skill proficiency level.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work or a related clinical field
  • Two or more years of professional counseling, academic advising or career counseling work experience
  • Sign language proficiency
  • Knowledge of mental health counseling, academic advising, and career counseling principles and practices
  • Skill in written, verbal, and interpersonal communication to influence and articulate a variety of topics to different and diverse audiences
  • Skill in multi-tasking, project management, prioritization, and organization
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy, cultural awareness, and confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain detailed and compliant documentation such as case notes, semester reports, and appraisals
  • Master's degree in related field
  • 1 year of relevant experience
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising, career counseling, and personal/transitional counseling to a caseload of students
  • Consult with institute faculty, staff, parents, vocational rehabilitation counselors, and others
  • Complete documentation (i.e.: case notes, outreach, reports, etc.)
  • Participate in department meetings
  • Engage in professional development meetings
  • Conduct presentations/projects as needed
  • Meets with students to review degree progress and assesses progress against graduation requirements. Ensures student understand how to navigate course registration and degree requirements
  • Monitors students’ progress and helps students resolve requirement concerns. Identifies alternative courses and solutions to meet degree requirements. Assists students with changing course registration
  • Reviews career goals with students and assists students with post-college planning, including reviewing and revising resumes, identifying valuable internships and fellowships, and coaching with interviews
  • Maintains knowledge of key registration and enrollment dates. Stays current in best practices related to academic advising, student success, and higher education
  • Assists students in identifying resources and communicating with administrators, faculty, staff, other department and service groups regarding counseling, financial aid, career services, student life, and disability services as needed
  • Conducts outreach to students to build and foster relations, provide helpful information, and ensure students are aware of available services
