About The Position

As Counsel, Risk & Litigation, the attorney is responsible for assisting the Associate General Counsel, Employment and other business partners in the management and handling of litigation and other risk related matters in the Company. They will assist in handling informal dispute and litigation matters, including litigation management, administrative charge management, and advising on policies and procedures. Provides in-house legal counsel on risk and litigation related matters, which may include, but not be limited to, real estate, environmental, contract disputes, personal injury, and other charges and/or arbitrations, and generally assists the Associate General Counsel, Employment, Litigation & Operations. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and policies. Identifies and assesses legal risks and opportunities within various legal risk areas and advises accordingly. Reviews and updates business policies to comply with legal requirements while meeting business needs. Independently handles legal matters and projects ranging from basic to complex. Partners with Risk Management team on pending litigation and any applicable insurance coverage. Recognizes when to elevate certain matters to the attention of the Associate General Counsel, Employment, Litigation and Operations and/or General Counsel. Supervises, manages and evaluates outside counsel on litigation. Educates and trains clients and stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures. Advocates VF’s interests in assigned matters. Establishes and maintains relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues. Able to travel up to 15% of the time.

Requirements

  • JD degree from an accredited law school
  • Active CA bar membership
  • 5+ years of litigation experience with a corporate legal department or nationally recognized law firm
  • High competence as a lawyer
  • Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills within and across departments as well as externally
  • Must be proactive in providing counsel to clients
  • Exceptional cross-collaborator that works with other attorneys in the department on multi-faceted issues
  • Sound judgment
  • Ability to clearly make reasoned recommendations
  • Ability to cross think and determine who should be kept informed
  • Self-starter with curiosity, good business sense and a sense of urgency, honesty and fairness

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with advising on and litigation under California law preferred.
  • Experience handling complex litigation before federal, state courts and administrative agencies.
  • Experience counseling clients on legal risk across subject areas.
