About The Position

Carvana's Legal Department is seeking an attorney to join as Counsel, Regulatory Compliance. This role will focus on supporting the company's responses to regulatory examinations, investigations, inquiries, and complaints. Additionally, the position will provide legal and regulatory support for Carvana's automotive sales, consumer finance, payments, and other consumer-facing financial services, including technology-driven financial services and fintech business models. The role reports directly to the Senior Counsel, Consumer Finance, and collaborates closely with other members of the Legal and Compliance teams. While direct experience in automotive finance is beneficial, it is not a strict requirement. Relevant backgrounds include regulatory relations, enforcement, consumer finance, consumer protection, servicing, payments, or other high-volume consumer financial matters.

Requirements

  • A JD and membership in good standing with a United States Bar.
  • 5-7 years of experience providing legal support to sophisticated businesses, including experience or exposure to regulatory examinations, investigations, or enforcement, consumer finance, consumer protection, consumer lending, payments, servicing, or related consumer-facing matters.
  • Experience at a national law firm, in-house, or combination of both.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior research skills and ability to condense complex regulatory and consumer finance issues into concise and easily understandable summaries.
  • Comfort using modern legal research platforms and enthusiasm for responsibly leveraging AI-based legal tools.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to leadership within the Legal Team and collaboration across stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience influencing others to take action.
  • Experience interacting with and working directly with/for internal/external business partners.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.

  • Substantive experience with state/federal auto dealer regulations and best practices.
  • Experience with regulatory complaint responses.
  • Experience tracking and analyzing federal and state rulemaking and drafting comments.
  • Consumer loan servicing experience, including a significant understanding of the complex dynamic of master servicing and subservicing.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience defining and implementing process improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a mastery of Carvana business processes and systems.
  • Provide counsel to Carvana stakeholders, in partnership with senior members of the Legal team, on consumer finance and regulatory requirements, including consumer protection, consumer lending, payments, and servicing.
  • Support the Legal team on regulatory examinations, investigations, inquiries, and complaints, including preparing and coordinating responses, gathering information, and analyzing issues across legal, compliance, and business teams.
  • Support regulatory change management by monitoring the consumer financial regulatory landscape, including federal and state rulemaking affecting Carvana's lending activities, drafting comments where appropriate, and translating developments into actionable guidance for the business.
  • Research and analyze consumer finance and regulatory requirements (e.g. TILA, UDAAP, FCRA, FDCPA, Regulations Z, E, and B, and NACHA rules), and provide timely, concise, business-focused advice in response to stakeholder and operational questions.
  • Advise on regulatory risk in consumer-facing operations, escalating novel or high-risk issues surfaced through complaints, disputes, or government inquiries.
  • Use AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency, issue spotting, and consistency in legal analysis.
  • Manage and execute on projects and other deliverables as assigned by Legal Team leadership.
