About The Position

Under the supervision of the Costume Shop Manager, the Costume Technician supports the department’s production and academic program demands by creating costumes from designer renderings, as well as assisting the Shop supervisor with costume spaces and stock maintenance. This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments mayే expire prior to the ending date.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in sewing, pattern making, and other relevant costume techniques.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to interpret designers rendering.
  • Ability to work withing time limits, and meet deadlines.
  • Working Knowledge of historical styles, accessories, and patterns for men's and women's garments
  • Working Knowledge of flat pattern techniques, draping techniques, pattern manipulation techniques, costume/garment construction techniques, fabric manipulation techniques, and fitting techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of millinery techniques, cordwainer and cobbler techniques, dyeing techniques, paint and surface design techniques, and other costume crafts techniques.
  • Knowledge of materials, supplies, notions, and equipment appropriate for theatrical costume and accessory fabrication.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • Equivalent to 24 semester units of related college coursework and two years of related professional or technical experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience in costume construction and maintenance, preferably in a theatrical or performing arts setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts, Fashion Design, or a related field preferred, and/or equivalent professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Cutter/Draper, working mostly independently taking measurements, creating patterns, cutting, constructing, fitting and altering garments.
  • Re-fabricates, and alters existing garments.
  • Creates costume accessories and decoration.
  • Assists undergraduate students by advising on appropriate choices to complete garments and accessory construction/alterations.
  • Assists the Costume Shop supervisor in maintaining the Costume Shop spaces, garments, machines, tools, and supplies.
