About The Position

Under the general supervision of the faculty costume designer, the Costume Shop Lead Technician is responsible for the leadership, coordination and planning of the day-to-day operations of the costume shop, including its machines, work spaces and costume stock. The Shop Lead also demonstrates sewing techniques and directs the activities of laboratory-students in the costume shop. This position provides lead work oversight of costume shop staff, student assistants and laboratory students.

Requirements

  • Four years of related experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production and completion of professional training or college coursework.
  • Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses in a related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership, coordination and planning of the day-to-day operations of the costume shop, including its machines, work spaces and costume stock.
  • Demonstrates sewing techniques.
  • Directs the activities of laboratory-students in the costume shop.
  • Provides lead work oversight of costume shop staff, student assistants and laboratory students.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and prepare detailed written information.
  • Plan, organize, and schedule activities.
  • Create and maintain program records and provide data for review in developing and implementing strategies to meet programmatic goals and enhance processes.
  • Conduct research to develop a comprehensive knowledge of costume design.
  • Support classroom instruction by performing classroom demonstrations related to the daily operation of production in the costume shop.
  • Work with faculty, provide training, oversee day-to-day operations and provide lead work direction to students involved in productions.
