About The Position

The Cost Engineer is responsible for developing accurate and comprehensive cost calculations for new products. This role leads the estimation of initial costs for materials, sheet metal fabrication, weldments, CNC‑machined components, complex assemblies, and outsourced operations. Acting as a critical bridge between Sales and Engineering, the Cost Engineer translates technical requirements into reliable cost models and supports informed make‑or‑buy decisions in collaboration with the supply chain. This position plays a key role in ensuring competitive pricing, manufacturability, and cost transparency from project inception.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates a high level of attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with strong organizational capabilities.
  • Proficient in Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001–based Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Experience applying continuous improvement methodologies, including Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar tools.
  • Strong affinity for manufacturing technologies, including machining, sheet metal fabrication, assembly processes, and product testing and qualification.
  • Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and familiarity with inspection equipment and measurement gages.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new processes quickly and effectively train or mentor others.
  • Innovative thinker with the ability to challenge existing processes and drive improvements in technology, equipment efficiency, quality performance, and structural cost reduction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively across multiple organizational levels and functional areas.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to follow safety procedures, interpret work instructions, and communicate clearly with supervisors and team members.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering or a related engineering discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment with a strong focus on cost estimation, cost analysis, or cost control.

Nice To Haves

  • SolidWorks experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with international material standards (ASTM, ISO, DIN) is a plus.
  • Previous experience in high‑tech/semiconductor, aerospace, or medical device manufacturing environments is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Sales to obtain and verify all information necessary to perform accurate project assessments and quotations.
  • Review and evaluate customer Technical Product Documentation (TPD) to determine manufacturing requirements and feasibility.
  • Identify material requirements and perform preliminary cost analysis, including supply chain considerations.
  • Apply a working understanding of material properties and identify equivalent or alternative materials as required.
  • Support the Supply Chain team in identifying, qualifying, and onboarding new suppliers for new or expanded manufacturing processes.
  • Develop initial process flows and Bills of Materials (BOMs) to establish true manufacturing costs.
  • Evaluate the impact of new projects on factory capacity, resources, and the 4Ms (Man, Machine, Material, Method).
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional project teams to determine costs associated with internal manufacturing processes and outsourced operations.
  • Develop and implement best practices, standardized routines, and innovative solutions to improve production rates, efficiency, and quality output.
  • Work closely with Project Management on changes in project scope, schedules, and costs.
  • Identify Non‑Recurring Engineering (NRE) costs and assess requirements for prototype builds and production runs, including OPEX and CAPEX considerations.
  • Support Production and Finance teams with post‑calculation cost validation, cost control, and ongoing continuous improvement initiatives.
