About the Role We’re looking for a Cost Accountant that will support accounting operations for assigned sectors and projects, including payroll review, accounts payable coding, job cost functions, reconciliations, forecasting support, and financial reporting to the Finance Team. This role works closely with Operations and Finance to ensure project financial data is accurate, timely, and aligned with company accounting standards. The Sector Cost Accountant collaborates with Project Executives, Sector Leaders, project teams, and the Finance Department to support daily, weekly, and monthly accounting timelines. This role requires regular travel and jobsite visits to understand project workflows, job-specific requirements, and the financial activity impacting project performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • Six or more years of accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Solid understanding of tax laws, fiscal procedures, and compliance standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Ability to enter data quickly and accurately.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to self-audit.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to travel to jobsites on a weekly basis as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Accounting experience in the construction industry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the month-end close process.
  • Assist with budget management and budget updates in coordination with Project Executives and the Finance Team.
  • Coordinate preparation of financial reports and supporting analysis using multiple software platforms.
  • Assist in preparing and communicating subcontractor and vendor good-standing status for assigned projects.
  • Assist in preparing supporting documentation for change order processing with Operations.
  • Audit, reconcile, and support weekly and biweekly payroll activity for assigned projects.
  • Audit, reconcile, and support weekly and biweekly per diem runs for assigned projects.
  • Review and initially code subcontractor and vendor invoices to appropriate projects and cost centers.
  • Review and initially code equipment invoices to appropriate projects and cost centers.
  • Review and initially code trucking invoices to appropriate projects and cost centers.
  • Monitor job cost activity to identify coding errors, missing information, or inconsistencies.
  • Partner with project teams to clarify cost coding, labor allocations, and project-specific accounting requirements.
  • Audit and reconcile company credit card statements and overhead expenses to ensure accuracy and proper coding.
  • Ensure assigned accounting activities comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, tax laws, and company policies.
  • Assist in supporting internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Identify and escalate financial discrepancies, compliance concerns, or documentation gaps.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records to support audits, reporting, and project financial reviews.
  • Assist in monthly forecasting updates for assigned projects and sectors.
  • Analyze financial data to identify and correct inaccuracies.
  • Support project teams with accurate cost information to inform forecasting and project decision-making.
  • Track trends in labor, equipment, trucking, subcontractor, and vendor costs that may impact project performance.
  • Support and drive utilization of company initiatives and technologies that improve financial operations.
  • Identify opportunities to create cost efficiencies through process improvement.
  • Support development of best practices within the accounting and project cost functions.
  • Recommend improvements to invoice review, coding, reporting, reconciliation, and forecasting workflows.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Operations to improve consistency, accuracy, and timeliness of project cost information.
