About The Position

The Cost Accountant is responsible for maintaining product costing, performing variance analysis, and valuing inventory within a manufacturing environment. This position supports month-end close, financial reporting, and internal controls, and partners with operations and accounting leadership to ensure accurate cost data. The role reports to the Accounting Manager and works closely with the Corporate Controller and Finance team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in cost accounting, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and cost accounting standards.
  • Experience with standard costing, variance analysis, and inventory valuation required.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel required, including Pivot Tables, advanced formulas (INDEX/MATCH, VLOOKUP, SUMIFS), and data visualization/charting.
  • Experience with ERP systems required; Oracle experience and/or SQL or database query tools are strongly preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities, and strict deadlines simultaneously with close attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to present financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and function effectively as a team player.
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and open to ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update standard costs for raw materials, labor, and overhead; execute periodic standard cost roll-ups.
  • Perform detailed cost and variance analysis (purchase price, usage, labor, and overhead variances) and present findings to management.
  • Analyze manufacturing costs and identify opportunities for cost reduction and process efficiencies.
  • Support inventory valuation, including cycle count reconciliation, physical inventory coordination, and adjustments.
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end close in accordance with company deadlines, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and cost-related accruals.
  • Prepare, review, and present cost-related financial statements and reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Compare current-period financials to prior periods and the budget/forecast; identify, investigate, and explain anomalies and trends.
  • Complete daily and monthly cash reporting, forecasting, and budget support as it relates to cost activities.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls related to inventory, costing, and financial reporting processes.
  • Assist with internal and external audit processes; ensure financial controls and policies are consistently followed.
  • Periodically review and recommend improvements to accounting processes, month-end procedures, and the chart of accounts.
  • Crosstrain with the Corporate Controller, Accounting Manager, and Finance Analyst on various accounting functions to ensure business continuity.
  • Partner with operations and supply chain teams to ensure accurate bill-of-materials (BOM) and routing data.
  • Assist with forecasting, planning, and budgeting processes as needed.
  • Contribute to special projects and ad hoc financial analyses as assigned.
