About The Position
Heartline Staffing is recruiting a Corrugated Packaging Designer for an onsite opportunity in Baltimore, Maryland. This role is responsible for creating, developing and refining corrugated packaging designs that meet customer requirements, manufacturing capabilities and industry standards. The Corrugated Packaging Designer will work closely with sales, production, customer service, tooling vendors, customers and graphic design to create accurate structural layouts, samples and manufacturing specifications. The role combines structural packaging design, CAD drafting, corrugated material expertise, tooling coordination, production support and customer collaboration.
Requirements
- Experience designing corrugated packaging including RSC, FOL, die cuts, displays and inserts REQUIRED
- Proficiency with CAD software such as ArtiosCAD, AutoCAD or equivalent REQUIRED
- Strong understanding of corrugated materials, flutes, board grades, stack strength and packaging performance REQUIRED
- Associate degree in Packaging, Engineering, Industrial Design, CAD Drafting or a relevant field, OR equivalent experience REQUIRED
- 2+ years of experience in corrugated packaging or a related manufacturing environment REQUIRED
- Ability to read and create technical drawings and manufacturing blueprints REQUIRED
- Strong math and spatial reasoning skills REQUIRED
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy REQUIRED
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects REQUIRED
- Customer-service mindset REQUIRED
Nice To Haves
- Experience with digital cutting tables such as Kongsberg
- Knowledge of flexographic printing processes
- Familiarity with TOPS or packaging performance standards
- Graphic design knowledge, including Adobe Illustrator
Responsibilities
- Design corrugated packaging for in-house manufactured items
- Create 2D structural drawings using ArtiosCAD based on customer requirements and manufacturing limitations
- Design RSC, FOL, die cuts, displays and inserts
- Modify existing designs to improve performance, cost efficiency or manufacturability
- Develop samples for customer approval
- Coordinate artwork for printing plates with tooling vendors, customers and graphic design
- Apply knowledge of ECT, Mullen grades, fluting and board combinations
- Determine appropriate board grades based on product protection, shipping requirements and stacking strength
- Balance structural integrity, packaging performance and cost effectiveness
- Prepare manufacturing specifications for production
- Work with design, tooling and production teams to ensure designs are manufacturable on company equipment
- Support equipment including flexos, die cutters and gluers
- Assist with troubleshooting design or fit issues during production
- Track active and backup tooling locations
- Coordinate tooling repairs with vendors, including pickups and returns
- Inspect incoming new and repaired tooling for damage and production suitability
- Obtain associated tooling costs
- Quantify cutting-die rule based on the design to support cost estimates during the quoting phase
- Purge dies as needed
- Work with sales representatives to understand customer needs and translate them into practical packaging solutions
- Provide design input during customer visits, presentations or technical reviews
- Develop samples and prototypes for customer demonstrations
- Utilize TOPS to provide requested information to customers
- Maintain organized records of design files, revisions, print plates and board specifications
- Ensure designs meet customer, industry and internal quality standards
- Follow revision-control and change-management procedures
