About The Position
The Corrections Sergeant contributes to the public safety mission by providing first-line supervision to Corrections Officers and Corrections Officer Trainees in an institutional setting. The role supervises and monitors staff on an assigned shift to help ensure a safe and secure environment; communicates with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public; leads and counsels staff; completes required training; and maintains a safe and productive workforce. The position is located in the MCV Secure Unit at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System in Richmond, Virginia.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license.
- Current Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification.
- Working knowledge and understanding of correctional policies, procedures, and practices.
- Ability to organize, plan, schedule, and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and prepare workplace reports and documentation.
- Ability to receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Nice To Haves
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Ability to produce written reports using a computer.
- Equivalent training or experience.
- Fluency in Spanish.
