About The Position

The Corrections Sergeant contributes to the public safety mission by providing first-line supervision to Corrections Officers and Corrections Officer Trainees in an institutional setting. The role supervises and monitors staff on an assigned shift to maintain a safe and secure environment; communicates with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public; leads and counsels staff; completes required training; and helps maintain a safe and productive workforce. The position is located in the MCV Secure Unit at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, Virginia.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license.
• Current Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certification.
• Working knowledge and understanding of correctional policies, procedures, and practices.
• Ability to organize, plan, schedule, and supervise the work of others.
• Ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and prepare workplace reports and documentation.
• Ability to receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

• Previous supervisory experience.
• Ability to produce written reports using a computer.
• Equivalent training or experience.
• Fluency in Spanish.
